Many serious health conditions — including diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers — develop silently, without noticeable symptoms, for months or even years. Preventive screenings are your best tool for catching these conditions early, when treatment is most effective.
1. Blood Pressure Check
High blood pressure affects nearly half of American adults and is a leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends at least one blood pressure reading per year for adults with normal readings, and more frequently if your numbers are elevated. It takes less than five minutes and could save your life.
2. Cholesterol Panel (Lipid Panel)
The American College of Cardiology recommends a baseline cholesterol screening at age 20, with follow-ups every four to six years for low-risk adults. If you have risk factors — family history, diabetes, smoking, obesity — your provider may recommend annual testing. A simple blood draw is all it takes.
3. Diabetes Screening (A1C or Fasting Glucose)
The CDC estimates that 96 million American adults have prediabetes, and 80% of them do not know it. The USPSTF recommends screening for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in adults aged 35-70 who are overweight or obese. Earlier screening is appropriate if you have additional risk factors.
4. Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S., but survival rates exceed 90% when caught early. The USPSTF now recommends screening starting at age 45 (updated from 50). Options include colonoscopy every 10 years, stool-based tests (FIT) annually, or Cologuard every three years.
5. Skin Cancer Screening
Arizona residents face elevated skin cancer risk due to our intense sun exposure. While the USPSTF does not recommend universal skin screening, we strongly recommend an annual skin check for our Scottsdale patients — especially if you have fair skin, a history of sunburns, or numerous moles. Self-exams between visits are equally important.
Take the First Step
If you are overdue for any of these screenings, schedule an annual wellness exam. We will review your complete health picture and recommend the screenings that are right for your age, risk factors, and health history.
